Australian Supermotard Championships 2007 Final Round

Team SXV Aprilia Racing on the podium
Milperra, Australia. Monday, November 26, 2007
Team SXV Aprilia Racing, along with the other teams in the Australian Supermotard Championships have traveled long and hard to get down to Melbourne’s Calder Park after a double header round in Queensland two weeks ago.“

Australia’s such a big place and driving the truck between championship rounds certainly proves that point”, said team technical supervisor Dave Ward. “However we got the bikes serviced and turned around ready for this last round in good time and we’re pretty confident that both Josh Mcfarlane on the 550 and Alex Gobert on the 450 will have a chance to shine at Calder Park as the venue has a fairly long straight.” As things happened, the track the team used for a test session last month was changed to a tighter, shorter, stop-start layout. “The bike is good here, but the advantage we thought we’d have has been negated by the tighter layout”, said S1 rider McFarlane. “But it’s the same for everyone and I’m enjoying riding here.” He added.

Unfortunately, lady luck seemed to dog Team SXV Aprilia Racing during this round. First, Josh suffered a fairly significant shoulder injury in a crash during practice and then Alex’s number one bike suffered its first mechanical problem of the year. “I’m sore, but it’s not too bad”, claimed McFarlane. “I got tangled up with Graham Cheney, went down and then his bike tried to park itself in my armpit. I’ll be fine to ride but we’re going to need a lot of ice today!”

“I’m not sure what’s wrong with the bike, but rather than spending time trying to fix it, we’ve made the decision that I’ll ride the spare.” Said Gobert. “That’s fair enough as Josh needs the team to concentrate on him and his bike – he’s fighting for a podium, whereas I’m likely to finish fourth or fifth overall. “My spare is a stock bike with a race pipe, so it’ll be a bit different compared to the Van Den Bosch replica, however it’s still got plenty of mumbo and it’s fun!”

Race One in the S1 class saw all the usual contenders up the front. Angus Reekie on his KTM won, followed by Husqvarna’s Graham Cheney with Josh on his SXV550 close on his heels. A much better start for McFarlane in the second race meant Josh was able to finish the first lap in second and maintain that position all the way to the flag. Unfortunately for Cheney, his bike expired resulting in a DNF. This meant Josh closed up to within six points – the Aprilia rider now had to beat Cheney by this margin to take second overall in the championship ensuring race three was a make or break one for both riders.

Race Three saw Reekie again leading into the first turn with McFarlane snapping at his heels. Then as they accelerated onto the banking for the first time McFarlane’s rear tyre slid out and a pursuing Cheney clipped the Aprilia’s back wheel. Josh saved the resulting high-side, but stalled the SXV and had to restart – now with a distinct gap to the leading pair.“

I tried like I’ve never tried before and was slowly catching Graham”, said Josh. “Then I got into the last corner of the dirt section too hot and the front folded. I immediately picked up the bike and got going again, but several guys had got past so it was a struggle to catch up. “In the end, I ran out of laps and finished 5th. Not a great result, but enough for second on the day and third overall in the championship. I’m sore and I’m upset that we didn’t get second but it’s on the podium and a good foundation for next year.”

Alex Gobert, riding the team’s only SXV450 Van Den Bosch replica, was very happy after the first qualifying session. “The bike is quick and very responsive here – and it needs to be because the track is very stop-start. I was third quickest and so things are getting better for me every time I ride the bike.” In the second qualifier, the young racer-journalist from AMCN magazine felt the bike slow after two laps and brought it back into the pits. “It’s lost some power and we can’t fix it in a hurry, so I’m going to ride the spare.” He said.

After finishing 12th in race one and 8th in race two, Gobert was reflective. “I haven’t used the spare all season – that’s how reliable the number one bike has been. So when I went out I found I had to bed the brakes back in. Although 12th and 8th isn’t the best result, I was getting faster and faster as the races progressed – it’s simply a matter of adapting to the stock bike which is very different to ride than the Van Den Bosch. The stock bike is a lot more stable and slower steering, basically it’s set up for the road, which makes getting around the very tight corners here a problem. So I’m really looking forward to next year as the constant progress the team has made will stand us in good stead for the 08 Championship.”“

Overall, the season has seen some great results for the innovative v-twin Aprilias.” Said Mark Barnett, John Sample Automotive’s Marketing Manager. “We’ve used this championship to prove that Aprilia’s innovation and technical prowess in building a v-twin dirt bike has been a major success. We’ll be back next year with 2008 model bikes and with even more determination to win a championship.

“I’d especially like to thank the privateer guys riding Aprilias in motard racing this last season.” Added Barnett. “We’ve had several contesting throughout the year and three travelled all the way here for this meeting. Shane Stratton was once again in action on his #21 bike in the S1 class, finishing a commendable 6th overall.  The Veterans class featured Paul Grant-Mitchell on his #69 SXV550 who finished 4th on the day and 6th in the championship and his comrade in arms Gordon Milne who finished 7th in the championship despite missing this round. The novice/clubman class featured Erin Stevens on his #55 SXV550 who finished the championship in overall 5th place. Congratulations to all Aprilia privateers, we’re looking forward to seeing you out there next year.”

Australian Supermotard Championships 2007 Rounds 4 & 5

Dual Podiums for Team SXV Aprilia
Milperra, Australia.  Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Team SXV Aprilia Racing journeyed to the Queensland Raceway Go Kart track for rounds four and five of the Australian Supermotard Championship held over the weekend.

Team technical supervisor Dave Ward was quietly confident, the team has raced their SXVs at the venue before and S1 class rider Josh McFarlane treats Ipswich as his “home” track, having plenty of laps under his belt at the tight and twisty venue.

“Although the track is not ideal for the huge amounts of top end power the SXVs develop, the bikes and riders have had plenty of time here, so we’re definitely hoping for a podium or two.” Said Ward. “So far practice has gone well with Josh in the top two on times on the 550 and Alex Gobert has really got to grips with the 450, so we’re more than ready for this double header.”

Josh McFarlane was even more positive saying he was hungry and focused on finishing races. “I’m not concentrating on the championship, I just want to put the SXV550 on the podium again and take it race by race. I’m treating this weekend as a stepping stone to Calder Park at the end of the month. The reason is simple: the SXV is really fast and this track isn’t – the
average race speed here is only about 110km/h. Calder is completely different and the SXV’s speed will come into its own there, so we are hoping to go out of 07 with multiple podiums and some race wins.”

In the S1 events, Josh qualified second behind KTM’s Angus Reekie on the Saturday and was second again on the Sunday. Consistency was McFarlane’s main attribute throughout the day on Saturday with the three races resulting in three thirds giving the experienced Queenslander third overall. Sunday saw Josh go one better with some great racing between the Aprilia rider
and Husqvarna’s Graham Cheney. “I kept in front of Graham but Angus was fast today,” said McFarlane. “In the first race I managed to gap Graham by a second or so and set off after Reekie but there weren’t many laps remaining so I couldn’t catch him. It’s too tight to make up a lot of ground and our top speed advantage doesn’t count for much on 100m long ‘straights’. However the bike steers and stops really well, so I set my fastest lap of the weekend chasing down Reekie. Overall I managed two seconds and a third for second overall, so we’re getting there and I know we can go one better at Calder – I can’t wait!”

Alex Gobert, who had returned from Europe late on the Thursday night, flew straight to Queensland for Friday’s practice. "I hopped off a plane from Valencia on Thursday night and then flew to Brisbane. I’m tired but feel ready for this weekend – I love riding the 450 and like the technical nature of the Ipswich track,” said the New South Welshman. "It's not a fast track but even so it’s pretty good, it is one of the harder and more technical tracks that we go to. The track suits the Aprilia and each time we go there we get better and better. I managed to qualified 5th and made superpole on both days. Not a bad effort."

"On Saturday, I had trouble getting off the start and I had to come through the field. My starts improved on Sunday and my times improved by 5 seconds. We got some good points for the championship, and before the next round I will a bit better prepared as I won’t have jetlag!"

When asked how the Aprilia stacks up at such a tight and technical track Alex was very positive about his Van Den Bosch replica SXV450. "The VDB suits the Ipswich track, as it steers really well. The engine configuration of the V-Twin suits open tracks but the chassis seems to suit tighter tracks, so the bike has strong points on all the tracks we visit."

"The bike has been great since I first hopped on it. I am still working on my riding and supermotard technique. We had previously tested at Ipswich so all major changes were made then, which meant we were able to ride, with only small suspension changes."

In addition to the Team SXV Aprilia Racing riders, Ipswich saw a plethora of privateer Aprilias racing with some great results in the S1 class with Allan McDonald sixth overall in round four and Shane Stratton sixth overall in round five. The Veterans class also featured two privateer SXV550s with Gordon Milne and Paul Grant-Mitchell bashing bars with the other greybeards for
a great result on Sunday: Gordon finishing with a fourth & two fifths, and Paul with a fourth, a sixth & a seventh. Congratulations to all Aprilia privateers – your factory team salutes you!

Australian Supermoto Championship - Round 1 Report
Date: August 28, 2007
Some great racing Action was witnessed at round 1 of the Australian Supermoto Championships presented by Hogs Breath Cafe’s at Oran Park on the weekend.

With the rain clouds finally lifting on from Sydney after a week of rain, Saturday turned out to be a perfect day for racing. The Oran Park Supermoto circuit had been reversed from the normal direction to add a new challenge to the racers. The Championship class races did not disappoint, with great close action from the SM1 open, SM2 the premier 450 and the SM3 up to 250 cc class.

S1: Some great racing between Angus Reekie (KTM), Graham Cheney (Husky Racing), Josh Macfarlane (Aprilia racing), Western Australia’s young gun David Gellatly and road race veteran Alistair Maxwell.

Reekie managed to get the better of Cheney. Josh McFarlane had a bad

start to the series with two crashes in the opening moto but put in a strong enough performance in moto two to take third overall on the day aboard his factory Aprilia SXV 550.

“After the disaster of race one, I just wanted to get into a rhythm and finish,” said McFarlane. “The bike is going brilliantly, and I’m enjoying the Oran Park layout more – we’re circulating the opposite way round this time out, and it’s definitely an improvement. I know I can go faster and the third race should see an improvement as I got faster lap-by-lap.”

McFarlane’s words proved prophetic – in the final race he got a great start to take second spot and maintained his position about half a second behind KTM-mounted Reekie for most of the race. On the last lap McFarlane threw everything he had at the leader gaining fastest lap of the race and bridging the gap to finish just 0.2 behind.

“I made a mistake in thinking I could chase down Reekie on the last lap – I pulled a third of a second but it wasn’t quite enough. I should have tried to catch him a lap earlier, but that’s racing. Overall I’m pleased to have got onto the podium after such a shocker of a first race.”

David Gellatly and Alistair Maxwell rounded out the top five.

“I had a great days racing,” said second placed man Cheney. “I struggled a little with starts, but my pace was definitely there. Angus and I shared fastest lap times across the day and I think if I had better starts I could have taken the win. I’ve really been able to find a set-up that works for me and the bike is just unreal at the moment.”

S1 Results

1 ANGUS REEKIE 75 / 25 25 25
2 GRAHAM CHENEY 64 / 22 22 20
3 JOSH MCFARLANE 56 / 14 20 22
4 DAVID GELLATLY 54 / 18 18 18

9 SHANE STRATTON 33 / 20 -- 13
10 MATTHEW BUCKLEY 24 / 12 12 --

S2: This was a great battle at the front along with some great action right through the field. Reekie took the win relatively easy in the first Moto from Taplin and a great ride from Nick Brain. However a slight overshoot on a corner early in race two let Rodney Taplin (Axis Honda) into the lead. Reekie challenged all the way, with a big move on the last corner that saw both riders go down. Both racing to their bikes Taplin managed to restart the Honda quicker then the KTM and still took the win. A hard charging Bennett, came through the field for great third place after suffering bike problems in race one.

The minor place action was also hot with Nick Brain securing third overall ahead of Alex Gobert and Luke Richards.

“Although I would have preferred to be right up the front, the pace this year is quicker than ever and to get in the top five in my first meeting on the bike is a real confidence boost.” Gobert stated. “The bike is really good – it turns in really quickly, then easily holds a line and fires out of corners like a jet. The SXV suits my style because it’s so good on the asphalt which is where my background is – road racing. The tyres are really good, we only used one set for the meeting and they hung in the whole time. I have to thank the team for letting me ride the 450 in this championship and I’m really looking forward to more time on the bike and the next double-header meeting at Newcastle.”

Linden Magee, Bennett, Steven Anderson, Kain and Harriman rounded out the top ten.

“The gear lever was a bit of a bummer,” said Bennett. “Other than that though, my SM 450RR was brilliant and I was happy with my pace for the weekend. The second race was tough, starting from the back of the grid, but I dug in and fought my way back to third. When Reekie and Taplin dropped it on the last corner I thought I may have been in for a win, but they got going quick-smart and I had a drag race with Reekie for the podium position.”

Nathan Porombka taking the last race win by half a wheel length over Halliday with a 3, 2 ,1 result. Jake Magee was right there and took out third over all with 2, 4, and 3.

Mayhem Two sees McFarlane on the podium!
Milperra, Australia. Monday, July 16, 2007
Team SXV Aprilia Racing enjoyed a hit out at the second round of the Moto Mayhem series, held at Oran Park on Saturday 14th July.

The team now has two riders – Josh McFarlane competing on his SXV550 in the S1 class and Alex Gobert on an SXV450 in the S2 class. New recruit Gobert said, “The 450 is very fast and I’m getting to grips with its lightning fast steering. It’s a seriously agile piece of machinery, that’s for sure.

“I spent Friday getting some base-line settings together and the bike felt good in qualifying on Saturday morning – I qualified 6th in both the All Powers and the Pro Open classes they run here at the Mayhem rounds.

“In the first race I had a bad start and bad first lap as I missed the sighting lap and had a new tyre. I was working my way through the field and crashed going into the dirt section. Unfortunately I bent the bars and got a DNF which meant I started race two from the back of the field. I did better second time out and managed to get up to 10th.

“This meant a mid-field start in race three and I feel I was riding better and really enjoyed the race, eventually finishing 8th. In the All Powers I had a better race with 8th, so I was reasonably happy with that. I know I can do better, but there’s good progress happening and I’m comfortable that I’m learning fast. The Aprilia and the team are working well, and I’m looking forward to the first round of the Australian championship next month.”

Josh McFarlane has had the advantage of riding an SXV550 for a year now, and he qualified third and performed well in the races, with second in the All Powers feature race, and two thirds and a fifth in the Pro Open events. The fifth was the result of a small low side running into the hairpin during race two – unfortunate as Josh was in second place and running down leader Angus Reekie at the time. However the places were enough to get third overall in the Pro Open and second overall in the All Powers, with McFarlane reasonably happy with his day’s work.

“The bike is fast and is improving with every outing”, said McFarlane. “I felt I rode well today, and know that we can be competitive in the Australian Championship.

“The team went all out to provide me with a good bike and I’m really happy with it and the way the team worked together. I crashed on the last lap of the second race, it was a front-end lose and entirely my fault, which meant I finished third outright instead of second. I’m still kicking myself, but can’t wait ’til we get out there again next month.”
He said.

“The event went exceptionally well with both bikes performing at a new level.” Said SXV Racing Technical Supervisor, Dave Ward. “We haven’t raced since February and while there’s always room for improvement, the team worked together to get a reasonable result after such a long lay off. Seeing Josh on the podium bodes well for the Australian Championship starting in August.” Added Ward.

Team SXV Aprilia Racing enjoys the support of: Dunlop Tyres, Motul Oils, Alpina Wheels, NGK spark plugs, Joe Rocket Leathers, RK Chains, Polisport Plastics and JT Sprockets.
